Dahlia Zingaro

Dahlia ‘Zingaro’ stands out for the way it never looks quite the same twice. Buds open in a deeper reddish-purple before unfolding into layered blooms where pale yellow sits at the centre and soft lilac-pink edges gradually appear around each petal. As the flower develops, the colouring continues to evolve, revealing subtle shifts between warm yellow, muted pink and deeper tones near the centre. The result is a decorative dahlia that feels almost painted by hand, with a gentle sense of movement built into every stage.

The blooms are fully double with broad, neatly arranged petals forming a rounded flower head. They typically measure 10–15 cm across, giving a balanced presence that is noticeable without being overpowering in the planting. Plants grow in a compact, upright habit to around 70–80 cm tall, with strong stems that suit both garden display and container growing. This restrained size makes it easy to place in smaller spaces or structured borders without the need for heavy support.

Flowering begins in midsummer and continues steadily until the first frosts. Instead of a single flush, the plant produces a constant succession of blooms, each one showing a slightly different stage of its colour progression. In the garden, it works especially well in softer, more atmospheric planting schemes where muted pinks, creams and burgundy tones can interact with its shifting palette. It also brings a subtle depth to contemporary combinations where variation is preferred over uniform colour blocks.

For cutting, it adds a layered, painterly quality to arrangements, blending easily with both pale and richer seasonal flowers. Plant in spring after the last frost in a sunny, well-drained position and allow space for development. Regular deadheading encourages continuous flowering throughout the season.
