Description
Dahlia ‘April Heather’ is a delicate anemone-flowered dahlia valued for its softly blended colouring and light, natural appearance in the garden. The blooms open in gentle tones of apricot, blush pink, warm cream and soft peach, often with subtle streaking that enhances their watercolour-like effect. At the centre, a raised cushion of creamy white to pale yellow florets creates contrast and texture, a defining feature of anemone dahlias. This layered structure gives each flower depth without heaviness, making it feel airy and refined rather than dense or formal.
Flowers measure approximately 10 to 12 cm across and are carried on upright stems above fresh green foliage. Plants grow to around 90 to 100 cm in height with a well-balanced, bushy habit suitable for borders, mixed planting schemes or cutting gardens. Dahlia ‘April Heather’ flowers continuously from midsummer until the first frost. Regular deadheading encourages a long and reliable blooming period, ensuring colour throughout the late season.
In the garden, its softly blended tones work particularly well alongside creams, blush pinks, light yellows and cooler planting schemes. The open flower form also brings movement and contrast when combined with fuller decorative dahlias or ornamental grasses. As a cut flower, it offers excellent versatility. The open structure and textured centre add interest in arrangements, pairing easily with both structured and loose, natural bouquets.
This variety grows best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Early staking is recommended in exposed gardens to support healthy growth and flowering.
