Description

Dahlia ‘Imperialis’, commonly known as the Tree Dahlia, is one of the most dramatic dahlias you can grow. Unlike traditional border varieties, this spectacular plant can reach heights of 3–5 metres in ideal conditions, producing tall bamboo-like stems topped with airy clusters of elegant blooms in late season.

The flowers are simple yet refined, opening in soft lavender-pink shades around warm golden centres. Rather than creating one heavy focal bloom, the flowers appear in loose sprays, forming a delicate canopy of colour high above the garden. The effect feels light, graceful, and almost cloud-like against autumn skies.

Flowering begins late in the season, often when many summer plants are fading, bringing fresh colour and vertical structure into the garden well into autumn. In warmer regions, flowering is especially reliable before the first frosts arrive.

Dahlia ‘Imperialis’ works best as a structural feature or backdrop planting in a sheltered sunny position. Its extraordinary height makes it ideal for walls, fences, large borders, and dramatic seasonal screening.

Plant dahlia tubers in spring after the risk of frost has passed, in fertile, well-drained soil with space to develop. Provide support in exposed locations and protect or lift tubers in colder climates.

          Planting information

          - Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

          - Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
