Description

Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ is a highly dramatic cactus dahlia known for its intense, near-black colouring and strong sculptural form. The petals are long, narrow and sharply pointed, slightly twisted to create a bold spiky bloom with real presence in the garden. The colour is a deep velvet red that appears almost black in shaded conditions, while richer burgundy and dark wine tones emerge as the flowers catch the light. This shifting depth gives each bloom a rich, layered appearance rather than a flat dark tone.

Flowers are large, typically reaching 15 to 20 cm across, and are carried on strong, upright stems that rise well above the foliage. Plants grow to around 90 to 120 cm in height, forming a vigorous, structured plant suitable for borders and cutting gardens. Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ flowers continuously from midsummer until the first frosts when regularly deadheaded. It delivers long-lasting seasonal impact and reliable performance through late summer and autumn.

In the garden, it is particularly effective when planted alongside lighter colours such as blush pink, cream and pale apricot, where its dark tones create strong contrast. It also works well in deeper planting schemes with burgundy foliage, purples and rich reds, adding structure and depth. As a cut flower, it is highly valued for its bold form and strong visual impact. The long stems and large blooms make it an excellent focal flower in arrangements.

Best grown in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, with staking recommended early due to its height and flower size.
