Description
Dahlia ‘Frost Nip’ is a spectacular dinnerplate dahlia prized for its enormous, romantic blooms and soft, luminous colouring. The flowers can reach an impressive 20–25 cm across, making them a true focal point in any summer garden or cutting patch. Each bloom is formed from long, gently pointed petals arranged in a loose, flowing structure that gives the flower both movement and elegance. The colouring blends creamy white, blush pink, and deeper rosy highlights, often with a subtle “frosted” effect along the petal edges in cooler light. This shifting palette gives every bloom a slightly different character.
Despite their size, the plants maintain a strong, upright growth habit. Sturdy stems support the large flowers well, especially when staked early in the season. Plants typically reach 100–120 cm in height and flower continuously from midsummer right through until the first frost, particularly when regularly deadheaded and cut. In the garden, ‘Frost Nip’ works beautifully as a back-of-border feature or standalone focal plant where its scale can be fully appreciated. It pairs naturally with soft pastel schemes, cottage garden plantings, and ornamental grasses, but is equally striking as a single statement plant.
As a cut flower, it is outstanding. A single bloom can anchor an entire arrangement, bringing volume, softness, and a classic dinnerplate dahlia presence. The stems are strong and long, and the blooms hold well in the vase.
For best results, plant tubers in spring after frost in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Provide support early and maintain regular watering during active growth for best flowering performance.
