Description
Dahlia ‘Orange Hype’ is a striking collarette dahlia known for its layered colour play and expressive, slightly untamed flower form. Each bloom opens with soft peach-orange outer petals that sit over a warmer base, creating a glowing foundation of colour that immediately draws the eye. Inside the outer ring, a frilled collar of narrow, slightly twisted petals forms the defining feature of this variety. These inner petals shift between orange, soft pink and subtle lilac tones, surrounding a bright golden centre. This combination gives each flower a vivid, multi-dimensional appearance with a strong sense of movement and variation.
The blooms typically reach around 10–15 cm across and are produced in abundance on tall, branching plants. Strong stems carry the flowers well, making this variety highly suitable for cutting as well as garden display. Plants can reach approximately 150 cm or more in good conditions, forming a vigorous, upright structure that benefits from support in exposed sites. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues until the first frosts, with regular cutting encouraging even more blooms throughout the season. ‘Orange Hype’ is especially valued for its consistency and productivity, producing fresh flowers steadily rather than in a single flush.
In the garden, this dahlia brings warmth, energy and texture without feeling one-dimensional. It works beautifully in mixed borders and cutting gardens, where its unusual colour blend stands out among greens, corals and deeper reds, while also contrasting effectively with softer pastel planting schemes. The open centre is also highly attractive to pollinators, adding life and movement to the planting. As a cut flower, it is particularly versatile. The long stems and dynamic colouring make it ideal for arrangements that need texture, contrast and a more natural, expressive feel.
‘Orange Hype’ thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It is a vigorous, rewarding variety that benefits from support and regular cutting, delivering continuous colour from summer into autumn.
