Description

Dahlia ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ is a spectacular dinnerplate dahlia known for its enormous, softly ruffled blooms and richly blended colouring. The flowers combine smoky plum, dusty raspberry, muted apricot and soft lilac tones, creating a layered, painterly effect that changes beautifully with light and maturity. Unlike more structured decorative dahlias, the broad petals twist and curl naturally at the edges, giving the blooms a loose, windswept appearance. This relaxed flower form softens the scale of the blooms and gives the plant a more romantic, expressive character in the garden.

Flowers typically reach an impressive 25–30 cm across and are carried on long, sturdy stems. Plants grow to approximately 120–150 cm in height, forming tall, vigorous clumps that benefit from early staking to support the weight of the flowers. From midsummer until the first frosts, ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ produces a continuous display of dramatic blooms. Regular cutting or deadheading encourages further flowering throughout the season, making it especially rewarding in cutting gardens.

In borders, this variety works beautifully as a focal point where its size and colouring can be fully appreciated. It pairs naturally with blush pinks, creams, warm apricots and deeper plum tones, adding depth and movement without feeling overly formal.

As a cut flower, it is exceptional. A single bloom can anchor an arrangement, bringing volume, texture and subtle colour variation to natural, garden-style bouquets.
