Hosta RED NINJA ('Nk2021') has taken the gardening world by storm after being named Chelsea Plant of the Year 2026. Bred by Dutch plantsman Ninja Kramer, this exciting new variety stands out thanks to its bold red leaf stems and impressive sun tolerance.
Unlike many red-stemmed Hostas, RED NINJA keeps its rich crimson stems from spring right through to autumn. They don't fade or turn green, creating a striking contrast with the deep green leaves all season long.

Most Hostas with red stems only keep their colour for a short time. RED NINJA is different. Its bright red stems stay colourful throughout the growing season, making it a real feature in the garden.

Planting
Plant in spring or early autumn.
Choose a sunny or partially shaded position.
Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
Leave 45-60cm between plants to allow room for growth.
Care
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry weather.
Apply a layer of mulch in spring to help retain moisture.
Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring.
Protect new shoots from slugs and snails.
Divide mature plants every three to four years to keep them healthy.
Winter Care
RED NINJA is a fully hardy perennial that returns every year.
Allow the leaves to die back naturally in autumn before cutting them away. In colder areas, a layer of mulch over the crown will provide extra winter protection.
Planting information
- Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.
- Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.
- Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.
- Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
